Diabetes Specialist Doctor in South Delhi
Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death in the world. Known in medical parlance as Diabetes mellitus, this is a condition characterized by high blood glucose levels, caused either due to insufficient production of blood glucose controlling hormones or unresponsiveness of the cells to the blood glucose controlling hormones, or both.
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a metabolic disease and a lifestyle disorder that manifests as high blood sugar levels. The food that we consume is the main source of glucose that gets utilised as the energy required for our daily functions. The hormone insulin produced by the pancreas is responsible for converting glucose into energy.
Due to either insufficient insulin production by the pancreas (insulin insufficiency) or due to the resistance of action of insulin (insulin resistance) the glucose does not get converted into energy thereby increasing the level of glucose in the blood (hyperglycaemia).
What is diabetology?

Type 1 Diabetes
Individuals with type 1 diabetes have absolute insulin deficiency due to the pancreas not producing insulin, this usually happens due to an autoimmune reaction where the individual’s immune system attacks the pancreatic beta cells and destroys the insulin-producing cells.
Type 1 diabetes is most commonly diagnosed in children and young adults and this is also known as juvenile diabetes. People with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin daily as part of their medication and treatment plan and to survive.
Type 2 diabetes
This form of diabetes is the most common type and has made India the diabetes capital of the world. Type 2 diabetes develops at any age but usually occurs in middle age and older people due to a poor lifestyle, faulty habits and a genetic predisposition.
Individuals with type 2 diabetes are unable to produce and utilise insulin well and their treatment usually includes lifestyle modification, oral medication and sometimes insulin therapy.
This type of diabetes develops in women during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes usually resolves post-childbirth but predisposes the mother to develop type 2 diabetes later in life. Many times diabetes that is diagnosed during pregnancy may be pre-existing type 2 diabetes.
Type 1 Diabetes:
It is an autoimmune disorder, that is, the immune system attacks and kills the cells in the pancreas which produce hormones to control the blood sugar levels due to a combination of genetic predisposition and other unidentified environmental factors.
Type 2 Diabetes:
This is mainly caused due to the resistance of the cells to blood glucose controlling hormones. Because of this, the glucose cannot be moved from the blood into the cells.
Gradually, as sugar builds up in the blood, it poisons the pancreas, making it more difficult to keep the blood glucose levels under control.
There are certain other risk factors which puts a person at an increased risk of developing diabetes:
- Overweight/ Obesity
- Family history of diabetes and/or high blood pressure
- Sedentary lifestyle
- History of gestational diabetes
- History of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
- Having high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels less than 50mg/dL
