WHAT IS ACID REFLUX?

Acid reflux is caused when the valve also called the sphincter connecting the stomach to the esophagus is weakened. The weakening allows stomach acid to flow back to the food pipe. As the acid is an irritant, the food pipe-lining also becomes inflamed causing discomfort and heartburn sensation. You may feel hot, acidic, or sour fluid in the throat. You may also feel chest pain when bending down or after lying down. If the problem persists for more than twice a week it causes gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

In India, around 10 million people are affected by acid reflux every year. Pregnancy, obesity, diabetes, asthma, etc can lead to reflux of acid into the esophagus.

Symptoms of Acid Reflux

Obesity/ fatty foods can lead to acid reflux. The main symptom of acid reflux is heartburn. Heartburn is a pain that moves up towards the chest from your stomach. Despite the name, it has nothing to do with the heart.

Apart from heartburn, other symptoms are:

It has been assumed that it may be caused by an interaction between patient genetic perceptivity and the atmosphere.

The release of symptoms may be unwilling or may be due to medicine. Because of the transmural nature of the disease, it can lead to complications like ulcer formation, fistula, or bowel stenosis.

Long-term colitis is a risk factor for bowel cancer. It is managed initially by a Gastroenterologist.

Surgery for Ulcerative Colitis-
The standard procedure for doing the surgery of ulcerative colitis is proctocolectomy. In this, both your colon and rectum are removed (usually called the large intestine).

Proctocolectomy has 2 types in it:

Proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis: Once the colon and rectum are removed, a small internal pouch is created that reduces the need for a permanent external ostomy.

Proctocolectomy with end ileostomy: In this procedure, after the removal of the colon and rectum, the ostomy procedure is done. The ostomy procedure is also known as bowel diversion, in which the rerouting of intestinal contents is done when part of the bowel is diseased or removed.

This surgery can be done as a one-time procedure.
